Go east

The Eastern Algarve retains its natural charm and beauty even though it is very much the “up and coming” part of the region. Its beaches are long, flat expanses of soft gold sand with dunes and even islands, all part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Not far from the coast you can find citrus groves and even vineyards and fishing is still a part of daily life. Overlooking the coastal area are the foothills of the Serra de Caldeirao, home to villages untouched by time.
The River Guadiana, which forms the border with neighbouring Spain, is only 20 minutes by car. Cross the river and you have another world and another culture. Enjoy streets of Ayamonte just across the border, or the sophisticated glamour, history and culture of Seville, an hour by motorway.
